The ‘crisis in human resources’ in the health sector has been described as one the most pressing global health issues of our time. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that the world faces a global shortage of almost 15 million doctors, midwives, nurses, and other healthcare professionals. A global undersupply of these threatens the quality and sustainability of health systems worldwide. Moreover, the equitable availability of a skilled healthcare workforce stands as a critical component for attaining the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Global Health Workforce Capacity Building initiatives hold promise for elevating healthcare workforce development and health outcomes. However, they encounter a range of challenges that can impede their success. During this satellite session, we will highlight various workforce capacity strengthening initiatives spearheaded by members of the CUGH Workforce Capacity Building subcommittee. This interactive session will consider the strengths and limitations of these initiatives and foster discussion on lessons learned to fortify future endeavors. Format will include presentation of exemplars and discussion.
