As leading international donor and a country with strong research, Germany has started several initiatives for strengthening research in Global Health and linking it to practice by establishing new platforms. Global health research is one of the pillars of the new German Global Health Strategy. Three of the government-funded programmes, the German Alliance for Global Health Research (GLOHRA) and the DAAD Global Centers for Health and Pandemic Prevention and the Research Networks for Health Innovations in Sub-Saharan Africa (RHISAA), will be presented in more detail.
Case reports from several of the initiated projects and centers will demonstrate the scope of topics and added value of these new collaborations, ranging from classical tropical medicine or pandemic prevention to migration of care or mental health.
Based on insights from these initiatives, we will discuss new approaches in connecting global health researchers nationally (by the alliance) and internationally (by joint centers and funding), interdisciplinary reviewing of research proposals (biomedicine, public health, social sciences & humanities, engineering and other sciences), early career support (scholarships, academy and graduate center), intercontinental joint supervision and interaction with politics (institutionalized dialogues).
