VIRTUAL SATELLITE SESSIONS

Pre-conference virtual satellite sessions are developed and hosted by CUGH’s committees, member institutions, and diverse organizations around the world. They address a broad range of global health challenges and were created to enable participants unable to attend our conference  to share knowledge, collaborate and identify actionable steps that can be  taken to improve the well being of people and the health of our planet.  These virtual, interactive 3 hour or 6 hour sessions run from April 3rd-7th, 2023. They are free and open to anyone around the world to attend but do require separate registration at www.CUGH2023.org. They are not to be missed!

In person pre-conference satellite sessions are developed and hosted by CUGH’s committees and member institutions, and diverse organizations addressing specific challenges to human or planetary health. They are interactive workshops that give participants the time to share knowledge, collaborate and identify actions they can take to address global health challenges.  Half- or full-day, in person  satellite sessions run on April 13. Anyone is welcome to attend these sessions whether they are attending the conference or not. Most sessions are free but do require separate registration at www.CUGH2023.org. They are not to be missed!



BREAKING DOWN BARRIERS

UNITE is a non-profit, non-partisan network of ~300 current and former members of Parliaments, Congresses and Senates, from 95 countries around the world Our main goal is to achieve political impact in Global Health by ensuring that science-based recommendations from trusted sources find their way to become law and policy in national, regional and global contexts.

The session on "Breaking Down Barriers: Fostering Partnerships Between Academia and Policymakers to Advance Evidence-Based Health Policies" is designed to facilitate dialogue and collaboration between policymakers and academics. The session will provide a platform for policymakers and academics to exchange ideas, share best practices, and identify opportunities for collaboration.

WORLD HEALTH SUMMIT REGIONAL MEETING 2023

The World Health Summit Regional Meeting is taking place in conjunction with CUGH 2023, Global Health at a Crossroads: Equity, Climate Change and Microbial Threats (April 14-16) and the AACHI's Global Innovation Forum (April 13). This will be the first time these three organizations have met at the same time and location. It is an extraordinary opportunity for collaboration amongst members from these three organizations. Registrants for the WHS can access a discounted rate to attend CUGH 2023.

THE PEOPLE’S VOICE SURVEY: INTEGRATING POPULATION PERSPECTIVES INTO HEALTH SYSTEM MEASUREMENT*

This interactive session organized by Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health will introduce the People’s Voice Survey, a new multi-country tool to integrate population perspectives into health system measurement. In this session, participants will learn about the survey content and methodology, preview early results in Wave 1 countries, hear from expert researchers on best practices for measuring population perspectives, and discuss what researchers and policymakers can learn from the findings.


GLOBAL HEALTH: SCIENCE AND PRACTICE: THE PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE OF GLOBAL HEALTH PROGRAMS*

Global Health: Science and Practice (GHSP) is an open-access, peer-reviewed journal that is intended to be a resource for public health professionals who support health programs in LMICs. Funded by USAID, Launched in 2013, the journal is celebrating its 10-year anniversary. In that time, we have received over 5000 submissions and published over 900 articles on a broad array of public health topics, all with a focus on what will contribute to better programs. Featuring Editor-in-Chief, Stephen Hodgins (University of Alberta), Advisory Board member, Zulfiqar Bhutta, (University of Toronto/Aga Khan University), Managing Editor, Natalie Culbertson (Johns Hopkins Center for Communication Programs) and others, this session will be an opportunity to highlight the journal's achievements over the past 10 years as well as discuss the future of global health programs and the role GHSP hopes to play in that future.

TRANSFORMING MEDICAL EDUCATION THROUGH DIGITALLY-ENABLED CAPACITY BUILDING*

Join us for an insightful discussion on capacity-building in health workforce education in low and middle-income countries (LMICs) through digital solutions. Featuring notable speakers including Chelsea Plyler, Director of Yale-Liberia Health Programs, Dr. Charles Ibingira, Principal of Makerere University College of Health Sciences, and Stefan Wisbauer, Co-CEO of Lecturio, the session will explore the need for new models and propose solutions to enhance medical education in LMICs. Through case studies such as the Liberia-Yale program and the Health Extension workers program in Ethiopia, the speakers will discuss the potential for Africa to leapfrog in health workforce education. Don't miss the chance to engage in an open discussion and Q&A session with the experts.

This session will focus on the transformational power of the digitally-enabled capacity-building in medical education. Lecturio will showcase the results of the recently implemented projects in Ethiopia focused on supporting quality and scalable medical education across the entire health worker spectrum.

The Pulitzer Center and CUGH are pleased to present this annual film festival which features outstanding, gripping and often inspiring short documentaries on a variety of global challenges by award winning filmmakers and Pulitzer Center journalists. The screening will be followed by an audience Q&A with a number of the documentarians. 

The film festival includes short documentaries featuring migrant communities facing dangerous conditions caused by climate change and those struggling with trauma. Others follow young Indigenous Brazilians fighting to defend their rainforests and Himalayan communities adapting their lifestyles. Conversation with filmmakers and journalists Valerie Plesch and Jessica Marcy follows the festival screening.

The goal of this annual, special workshop is to educate participants about the skills needed to pitch a story, translate complex issues to an audience, and make both traditional and nontraditional media work for them. It will give attendees practical guidance on how they can engage the media and communicate for impact. Communication specialists, researchers, and global health journalists will share their reporting on a range of issues, how they work with sources for their stories, and how experts across scientific fields can better communicate their research to the public. This session is organized by the Pulitzer Center for Crisis Reporting, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and Global Health Now.

GLOBAL LEADER INTERVIEWS*

These 30-minute interviews feature a diverse group of innovators, leaders and practitioners addressing important contemporary global challenges and issues. They will share their perspectives on what we can do to prevent and address these threats. You can see the interviews during the conference as they play on a loop and online at CUGH.org. Please share them widely.   


CUGH-PULITZER CENTER 10TH ANNUAL GLOBAL HEALTH VIDEO COMPETITION WINNERS AND HONORABLE MENTIONS*

CUGH and the Pulitzer Center for Crisis Reporting present the winners of the 2023 Global Health video competition. Filmmakers and documentarians were invited to submit short videos of up to 5 minutes in two categories, Global Health Challenges and High Impact Programs. One winner and two honorable mentions were selected for each category. The six shorts will be viewable all day April 14-16 in Dupont (Terrace Level). You can also find links to the films at CUGH.org.
